The salt-tolerant wheat variety Jimai 60 recently set a record for production on saline-alkali land after achieving an average yield of 587.1 kilograms per mu (0.067 hectares), according to an expert assessment conducted on Wednesday.

The harvest took place on a field in Beichang village of Dongying, Shandong province, part of the Agricultural High-tech Industry Demonstration Area. The soil in the trial field has an average salinity of 0.303 percent, giving it a classification of moderately saline-alkali land.

Bred by the Crop Research Institute at the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences and promoted by the Yellow River Delta demonstration area, Jimai 60 has now broken its own previous yield record under such conditions, signaling progress in the utilization of marginal lands for grain production.
